What to Expect During an Oral Cancer Screening

Twice yearly checkups with our dentists play an important role in your oral health. Not only do these checkups keep your teeth and gums healthy, but they also give us the opportunity to detect serious problems, such as oral cancer.

Our team at West End Dental is dedicated to helping you keep your oral health in tip-top shape. Oral cancer screenings are part of maintaining your oral health. Oral cancer typically appears as a growth that doesn’t go away. As with other cancers, treatment is more successful when oral cancer is detected early.

Cosmetic and general dentists Lauren Izadi, DDS, and Edward Kim, DDS, use routine checkups to look for problems with your teeth and gums, including abnormal growths.

First line of defense against oral cancer

Each year there are roughly 54,000 new cases of oral cancer. When detected early, the five-year survival rate is more than 90%. It’s crucial to schedule a visit with our dentists every six months to make sure there are no problems with your oral health. Dr. Kim and Dr. Izadi are trained to detect subtle abnormal changes that may not notice when brushing and flossing.

What happens during an oral cancer screening?

When you visit West End Dental, one of our team members goes over your medical history, including risk factors for oral cancer, such as a family history of oral cancer. We also discuss your current health status and any questions or concerns you may have about your oral health.

During an oral cancer screening, we closely evaluate your oral cavity, including your cheeks, tongue, gums, and floor and roof of your mouth. We look for anything abnormal, such as bumps, discoloration, and any irregular-looking tissue.

Don’t wait for your six-month checkup if you notice anything out of the ordinary with your oral health.
