Ceramic Crowns Q&A

What are ceramic crowns?

Ceramic crowns are a type of oral prosthetic used to repair a chipped, damaged, or decaying tooth. They’re custom-tailored caps used to restore a tooth’s integrity while preventing further damage.

At West End Dental, the team uses BruxZir® ceramic crowns. These crowns are incredibly tough and long-lasting. They also mimic the light-reflecting properties and color of your tooth enamel, ensuring they blend in with your other teeth whenever you laugh, speak, or smile.

What dental issues can ceramic crowns address?

At West End Dental, the team uses ceramic crowns to address a variety of issues, including:

  • Broken or fractured teeth
  • Decaying teeth
  • Damaged fillings
  • Uncovered dental implants
  • Root canal treatment

The team also uses ceramic crowns to improve the appearance of severely stained or discolored teeth.

What is the process for getting ceramic crowns?

Getting ceramic crowns typically takes two appointments. At your initial consultation, your West End Dental provider conducts an oral exam, takes digital X-rays, and asks about your goals for treatment. After gathering this information, they administer a local anesthetic and prepare your tooth to receive a crown by carefully removing a thin layer of enamel from the top and sides.

Next, your provider takes highly accurate molds of your tooth. The molds are sent to a dental laboratory that manufactures your ceramic crown. After preparing your tooth, your provider attaches a temporary crown. This prevents further damage and keeps harmful bacteria out of your root canal.

A week or two later your return to West End Dental for your second appointment. Your provider administers a local anesthetic, removes your temporary crown, and bonds the new permanent crown to your tooth. The process takes 30-45 minutes, and you leave with a fully restored smile.

How are ceramic crowns cared for?

Caring for ceramic crowns is easy. The team at West End Dental recommends brushing and flossing daily and visiting the office every six months for a professional cleaning and exam.

To prevent chips or cracks to your crown, wear a mouth guard while playing sports, and avoid bad habits like nail-biting or chewing on popcorn kernels. By following these guidelines, ceramic crowns can last for 12-15 years.
