Teeth Whitening Q&A

Why are my teeth stained and discolored?

Your teeth become yellow and stained as part of the natural aging process. As you get older, your tooth enamel wears down, revealing the inner portion of your tooth, called dentin. Dentin is yellow in color, so the more visible it becomes, the yellower your teeth appear.

Other factors can also contribute to discolored teeth, including:

  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Drinking beverages like red wine, colas, or coffee
  • Using tobacco products
  • Eating foods that stain like blueberries or tomatoes

You might also experience yellow or discolored teeth if you take certain prescription medications.

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening uses FDA-approved ingredients to remove stains from your teeth. Though teeth whitening isn’t permanent, it can make your teeth whiter and more aesthetically pleasing for four to six months at a time. Plus, if you brush and floss regularly, your results may last even longer.

What are the types of teeth whitening?

The team at West End Dental offers several types of teeth whitening, including:

Philips Zoom! In-office whitening

Philips Zoom! takes just one hour and can make your teeth between *6-10 shades brighter. Prior to Zoom! treatment, your provider covers your gums and tongue with a rubber barrier. Afterward, the whitening solution is applied to your teeth.

The solution sits for 10-15 minutes. Then, your provider points a special light at your teeth. The light triggers a bleaching reaction that provides instant whitening.

Opalescence™ in-office whitening

Opalescence teeth whitening only takes one hour and the process is very similar to Zoom! The only difference is that there’s no special light involved. Once your provider applies the whitening solution to your teeth, it automatically goes to work cutting through stains and discoloration.

Take-home whitening trays

Take-home whitening trays provide the same stunning results as in-office whitening but over a lengthier period. Take-home trays are plastic mouthpieces that you place a whitening solution in. Afterward, you wear them for three to four hours, while the solution goes to work.

What type of teeth whitening will I benefit from?

Only a qualified dentist can determine the type of teeth whitening that you’ll most benefit from. Following a comprehensive oral exam and a discussion of your goals and budget, the team at West End Dental can make recommendations that align with your needs.
